Good Neighbor by Urban Roots: Reviews & Ratings
Absolutely love the vibe of this place. Not pretentious at all, you can go and just have a relaxed fun time. Sat at the bar for an early dinner with my brother and the bartenders made our drinks to perfection (try their old fashion), were great to chat with and the food...the food was delicious. We shared the pasta and the burger, both were done really well and their fries were addictive. I loved the openness of in the interior too. No matter where you sit, you have a view of the entire inside. If there is 1 item you absolutely have to try, its the Basque cheesecake. Once you have it, you wont want to ever eat another kind, trust me.
An experience! Atmosphere is it's own vibe. Busy chaotic and loud the best best way. Food amazing -- best fries and biscuits and gravy. Service fast and friendly.

So good!! Ordered the fries and also the pork chops. Probably some of the best I’ve ever had. Service was fantastic too. Walk up to order drinks and apps and then sit down service for everything else. Greg was great and kept checking on us the whole time. They were also aware about what was gluten free or not. Would absolutely recommend!
I was very pleasantly surprised by Good Neighbor. Atmosphere: Walking in, it is slightly confusing. There’s an entrance from the street and an entrance from the side patio. The entrance from the side patio is where you’ll want to go because it leads you toward the check in counter whereas the entrance from the street will lead you to the bar and when the bartender tried to direct me to the counter, he was rather vague and I couldn’t tell where I was actually supposed to go. The check in counter is located in the back of the restaurant which seems counterintuitive. Eventually, I figured it out, but I wish maybe there was a sign above the check in counter or something that could lead you to it easier. That’s truly my ONLY gripe about this place. Service: I came in for lunch and the service was quick. I’m unsure how I feel about the cube they put out at the table for service and to pay to make the experience more convenient, but I will say it’s not inconvenient. Food: The food came out fast and was hot and fresh. I ordered the fritto misto and the mushroom pizza. Fritto Misto: I’ve never had a fritto misto before, but all I can say is GET IT. The shrimp was juicy, the calamari was perfectly fried and not rubbery, the leeks, olives, lemons, etc were crispy, everything was seasoned to perfection, and nothing on the plate was soggy. The aioli served on the side for dipping is the perfect pairing. Mushroom pizza: I’ve had my fair share of pizza in downtown sac and this is for sure up there. The crust was baked well and crispy; no burnt or soggy bottoms here. The flavors were rich and reminiscent of french onion soup. Innovative or mindblowing? No, I wouldn’t say so, but it’s certainly delicious and with many local pizza restaurants in sac only specializing in pizza and a few other items, you’d be surprised that this restaurant, with its wide variety in their menu can pull off a pizza that rivals some of the mainstays. Overall, I left my lunch totally satisfied and excited to eat my leftovers. I’ll definitely be coming back to try some other menu items.
Good Neighbor is great fit for the Ice Blocks in space that was Beast & Bounty. This is more casual gathering spot. Food was great! Started with pave fries. I had hanger steak & frites perfectly done. My friends had burger & paparedelle. Everyone was happy. Rob Archie does it again like he did at Pangea & Urban Roots
I went to dinner with two friends and had a great time here. We each had a good cocktail and then we shared a pizza, salad and two shareables. It was the perfect amount of food for three people. I would say the standouts were the pepperoni pizza and the Caesar salad. My least favorite was the frito misto. The arancini were pretty good too. The one bummer was that sitting close to the kitchen was very hot.

Good Neighbor by Urban Roots stands out as a vibrant addition to Sacramento’s eclectic dining scene. Nestled at 1701 R St in the heart of downtown, this spot strikes a rare balance between approachable comfort and lively energy. From the moment you step inside, you feel the openness of the space—no cramped corners, just an inviting layout that puts the entire room in view, encouraging shared experiences and warm connections.
The bar is a centerpiece here, with bartenders who craft cocktails that hit just the right notes—Nicole Mariscal’s recommendation of the Old Fashioned isn’t to be missed. These skillfully made drinks complement a menu that is rich in variety and flavor. The food at Good Neighbor delivers with clarity and flair, showcasing dishes that are thoughtfully prepared and satisfying. Their fries, noted repeatedly as “addictive” and “some of the best,” are a perfect example of their attention to texture and seasoning. The burger and pasta are hearty and flavorful without feeling heavy, a testament to balanced cooking.
One unmistakable highlight is the Basque cheesecake—its reputation among patrons is nearly cult-like. Its creamy texture and subtle sweetness create a dessert experience that lingers in memory far beyond the final bite, redefining expectations of what cheesecake can be.
Good Neighbor’s menu is a clever mix of familiar comfort and inspired innovation. Take the fritto misto, for instance—a dish that brings freshness and crispness to the forefront, marrying perfectly fried seafood and vegetables with the right amount of seasoning and a vibrant aioli. The mushroom pizza also deserves mention; with a crust baked to perfect crispness and flavors that evoke the heartiness of French onion soup, it challenges the notion that pizza must be simple to please.
The service strikes a friendly, attentive tone that enhances the overall experience. Whether it’s the fast-paced lunch crowd or quieter early evenings, staff members anticipate needs without hovering, creating a space where you feel both cared for and free to relax.
Good Neighbor by Urban Roots isn’t just another place to eat and drink; it’s a genuine neighborhood hub that embodies spirited hospitality and smart culinary craft. It invites you to unwind, savor, and return often—whether for casual hangouts or memorable meals. In the mosaic of Sacramento’s food scene, Good Neighbor carves out its own distinctive, welcoming niche.
